Thank you for ordering many brushes.
As Hakuhodo raise their prices and discontinue B series, I take many orders from new clients.
I want to write how long it takes me to get brushes and ship them.
Hakuhodo shop has M size brushes only with very few L’s.
When they don’t have a stock, they order to Hiroshima factory, and the factory sends brushes to Tokyo.
They take all orders by Sunday and summarize them for Hiroshima. And Tokyo receives brushes on Thursday or Friday.
It might take long.
For example,
If I get an order after Sunday evening (March 20) Japan time, I give my list to Hakuhodo on Monday (21st) or later, and it will be treated as an order for the following Sunday (27th).
I get brushes on the following Friday that is April 1.
FedEX and DHL are off on Sunday, it could be on April 4, when I ship brushes.
It could be a two-week process.
I really feel sorry to keep you waiting but I cannot do anything.
Besides,
Last Sunday, I gave Hakuhodo my list consisted of 270 brushes, maybe the biggest ever.
Hakuhodo employees’ faces were covered by agonized looks, LOL.
I see one issue, they don’t work on commission, so how busy they are, they don’t get paid more as many makeup brands’ employees get paid.
I suggested them to take an email with a file so that they don’t have to double input, I will see.

The other thing is Chikuhodo FO10.
I ordered FO10 two weeks ago but they have been out of stock.
Finally, they will arrive this weekend.
So sorry for people who ordered FO10 and waited long!

I know some people like Chikuhodo, some like Koyudo, but Hakuhodo may be the most popular. I am surprised that many people order Hakuhodo though they can be bought from the USA shop.

Fude Companies have raised their prices these days, so I was worried, but I can buy them at the same price.
It was good!
Today I want to talk about how brushes are taken care of or stored by a client of mine.
I asked a manager of Hakuhodo shop today.
She said, You can wipe hairs by cloth, and keep them standing in a case, such as pen case.
I also asked if a paulownia box keeps brushes better stored. She did not know.
Well, Hakuhodo doesn’t sell a paulownia box. She will ask the President Takamoto, who is working in Tokyo. She often meets him.Big brushes can be covered by vinyl that comes with a brush when bought.There are two vinyls and the one inside can be cut short to cover hairs.It prevents hairs from spreading.If brushes are not used for a long time, you can keep them in a plastic case in a place, not hot nor humid.If hot and humid, ferrules can get rusty. It is not harmful to a brush, but you can remove it by citric acid if you want.I asked if a brush needs to be washed.She said, ‘if a brush is washed too often, it will shorten the life. You can wash it once or twice a year. If hair has too much oil, please wash it.’
‘ New brushes can be used right away, with no washing.’‘Maybe a brush for liquid foundation can be washed more e.g. every three month.’She added,
‘ I wash a liquid foundation brush when I finish each liquid foundation. It is usually once a year.’‘You can clean it by a cloth when it is used.’
I asked about a liquid foundation brush. I will write next time.

Another change from June 1 this year is that Hakuhodo will not sell B series any longer.
B is ‘Basic’ and if other series such as J or G have popular brushes, Hakuhodo creates the same brushes under B series.
Let’s take an example of J531 and B531.
J531 is the same as B531. The only differences are logos.
B531 has handle options, not only in Black but in Silver, White and Champagne Gold while J is available only in Black.
After June 1,
B531 will be discontinued.
(If there is the stock, each shop continues to sell it, however, at the increased price)
J531 will be only available, with color options.
J series or G series or other series have color options in handle.
Currently J531 has only black handles.
Bad news is that only Black and Champagne Gold will be available as handle colors, going forward.
White and Silver will NOT be available after June 1.It all happens on June 1, and there is plenty of time.
No rush LOL.
By the way, I am always impressed that many clients act quickly.
I am a last-minute guy.
On the last day of the summer vacation, which is August 31, I used to write all diaries for school homework. For 50 days.
Back to brushes,
Hakuhodo made too many kinds of brushes and made inventory management difficult.

Hi Everyone,
Some hairs get rare and rare. and brushes with those hairs become expensive or discontinued.
A good example is Kolinsky.
There are still many eyeshadow brushes with Kolinsky, but cheek or face brushes are not being sold.
I ordered Takeda Kolinsky, 16 RK. It is a customized cheek brush and about 100,000 yen.
Takeda told me that the price might go up as the kolinsky hair got expensive.

Grey squirrel hair supply is still stable but Hakuhodo is another story.
Hairs are provided to Japan by European companies or others.
For example, Takeda name European way of hair, such as ECSQU or EF, European way of Canadian squirrel or (Sliver) Fox.
My recollection is that European way is more fluffy than the other ( e.g. Chinese way)
It is not clear where Hakuhodo sources hair, but a change was made, and the current hair is too fluffy to make 100% grey squirrel.
Therefore, grey squirrel hair will be mixed with synthetic hair to be more stable.
(or is it an excuse to make synthetic hair brushes ?, I don’t know…)
G5523 is now G5523N and F8132 is now F8132N.
There is no G5523 or F8132 with 100% natural hair any more.
*N is synthetic mixed.
This trend will expand to most grey squirrel hairs, if not all.
G5529L and G5534L are out of stock, and M is only available.S series is not the exemption.S series with grey squirrel will be replaced by synthetic mix. Small brushes’ stock is lower than that of big brushes.
Today I was informed that S142BK was not available to order.
Shop did not tell me if it was temporary or not, but grey squirrel will be replaced by synthetic mix after the current stock is sold out.
I will get more information and let you know.
I want to inform you of more accurate data but shops are not clear yet.

I visited Hakuhodo Shibuya and chatted with Shop manager.
As you may know, Hakuhodo will raise their prices on June 1.
She told me that I would need to order brushes at the current prices by May 22. Please let me know if you have Hakuhodo orders by May 22, Sunday.
After that date, I will update the prices to new ones.
She said, ‘the price increases were larger than what she had thought them to be.’
She did not say anything more than that, but due to the shortage in hair supply, she may not be exaggerating.Not to mention Canadian squirrel and Kolinsky,
Grey squirrel hair will be mixed with Synthetic.According to Hakuhodo,
certain type of grey squirrel hair is difficult to make as a brush and that is why grey squirrel needs to be mixed with synthetic to be stable.Well, it may be true,
But,
Grey squirrel hair is in short supply and that is why it needs to be mixed.
That is what I think.I will ask more and get back !

Some shop people are reluctant to do swatches, so it helps me to show them to my clients overseas if they are helpful.
It is quite new because shop people don’t perform online or don’t want to do so.
I mean it is Kanebo, a conservative and big company that owns SUQQU.

This manager in Shibuya speaks English, so you might want to visit her and buy SUQQU, although I want you to buy products from me LOL.

Hakuhodo introduced a new set.
The set has a Canadian squirrel brush.

Hi Everyone,
As you might know, brushes with certain natural hairs were discontinued. These hairs include Canadian squirrel and Kolinsky
I read news the other day about Kumano fude. The article explains: 90% of hairs are imported from China. And due to the Covid, Itachi (weasel) was not allowed to be exported by China. Maybe Kolinsky, one kind of Itachi, is included in the list.
Total import of hair to Japan has dropped by 50%. It could be temporary or permanent. I don’t know…

Kazan squirrel is another story. The hair is not as rare as kolinsky or Canadian squirrel. But, Chikuhodo tells me that Kazan squirrel hairs are difficult to arrange. It takes time to complete them as a brush. The handles are also hard to get.
Now, I suspect the Kazan squirrel import situation is similar to that of Canadian squirrel. Import gets less and less.
On the other hand, Hakuhodo explains that Kazan will not be discontinued. Hakuhodo doesn’t make face or cheek brushes from Kazan. They make only eyeshadow brushes.
Hakuhodo might have sufficient stock of Kazan.
So KZ series of Chikuhodo will be discontinued from a different reason than Kolinsky.
Here is the update.
KZ1, KZ2, KZ3, KZ4, KZ5 and KZ6 are discontinued.
KZ7 and KZ8 might be on sale in 2021, but I cannot buy them from Chikuhodo now.

I want to introduce Osaji today.
Osaji makes facial, body, hair and oral care products.
It is an organic cosmetic brand and doesn’t belong to any of makeup companies e.g. Shiseido or Kanebo.
Shigeta san, the founder, tried to make products friendly to sensitive skins in 2001 when looking after his ill mother who loves organic brands. She was not able to use some organic products and he began to research which ingredients are better.
Osaji means a ‘doctor’ in the Edo period, who worked for Shogun or high-ranked samurai’s.
Osaji uses ingredients that are friendly and compatible with skins.
And Osaji is made from ingredients only made in Japan.
Interestingly, Osaji sells Amazake, a fermented rice drink, rich with vitamins and minerals. (Please see a picture below)
I drink Ama (means sweet) zake every day because I love its sweet taste.
Amazake is called ‘drinkable IV-drip,’ because they have many benefits for health.

I receive orders for Osaji from time to time. From eyeshadows and nails to shampoo and conditioners.It was a little difficult to buy because I buy them at Isetan, which I don’t go to these days.

Today I visited a department store in Shibuya, and found an event by Osaji.
They told me that Osaji would open the first shop in Shibyya.
It will be easier to go and buy than going to Isetan, gong forward.

Hi Everyone,
As you might know, Japan closed the country for 300 years, from the 17th century to the 19th.
Japan will close the country again.
But this time, for one month.
It seems that people get back to normal life these days.
So I was hoping to see more tourists in 2022, and I am still hoping so.Prime Minster Kishida made an announcement yesterday to close the country for one month.

Though he was raised in Tokyo and NY for a while, his father came from Hiroshima and he is representing Hiroshima City as a senator.
He went to the best high school whose graduates occupy Tokyo University.
Yet, he failed the entrance exams for Tokyo University three times.
In Japan, 20% of high school graduates choose to spend one year (or more ) to prepare for a university exam.
We call those students ‘Ronin’ which literally means ‘Samurai with no job.’
Nowadays, ‘Ronin’ means a student who is preparing for an university exam.
Yes, they have a huge pressure.
But I call them ‘ the most spoiled children in the world.’
Does any other country give 18 year-old students one year or two off with money?
It is not really ‘off,’ because they study days and nights but parents pay for a prep school (about 10,000 USD per year for school tuition+ living expenses).
In return, students ‘study’ and ideally pass an exam for a school they want to enter.
I say this because I wasted my parents’ money,
My high school time was my dark age.
I lost a motivation not only to study but also to do other things.Naturally, I did not go to a university and preferred to do ‘nothing’ by the name of ‘Ronin.’
Kishida san tried to pass Tokyo University three times. And he was not successful.
He ended up with Waseda University that is also a prestigious school.
But, having a father who went to Tokyo University and became a politician, he must have suffered a huge setback.
My case is not as dramatic as his,
but,
when I take a long bath, my ‘dark age’ memory comes back.
But, you see, this negativity is the great motivation to do things.
I still survive and life goes on.
I suspect Kishida san also lives on his dark age and changes it into a good energy.
I hope ‘closing the country’ will work well in a longer term.

Hi Everyone,
I checked the history of brush-making in Japan.
It started 1200 years ago at Nara.
There are four major brush towns in Japan.
The town of Kumano, as you know, produces 80% of brushes in Japan.
Hiroshima Prefecture that has both Kumano and Kawajiri ( e.g. Koyomo and Bunshindo), occupies 90% of the market.
Do you know the other 10%?
The other two are :
Nara
and
Toyohashi
Nara is known for its history, temples and deers.
I guess many of you have visited Nara.
Toyohashi is located near Nagoya or the city of Toyota Car Company.

These towns have histories of more than several hundred years.
Nara brushes started 1200 years ago when one monk visited China and learned brush making.
The monk, whose name is Kukai, crossed the sea to China. There were 4 ships but only 2 shipped arrived in China.
Kukai, with other students, were planning to stay for 20 years, but for some reason, he came back to Japan with knowledge acquired in China after spending two years.
One of them was brush-making.
Nara was capital of Japan and the center of the Japanese culture.
Brush-making started in Nara.
Currently, Nara produces calligraphy brushes, not makeup brushes.

When the World War II ended in 1945, the calligraphy was take out of school programs. That was a compulsory study at school before the war.
It came back to an elementary school in 1971.
The production of calligraphy brushes has dropped significantly.
And
Many brush companies shifted the focus to makeup brushes.
Now Kumano is known for makeup brushes as well as calligraphy/painting.
‘Kumano’ became a brand name for makeup brushes.
But the process of making calligraphy/painting brushes are more complex and most craftsmen can make makeup, calligraphy and painting brushes.

Bisyodo announced the sale of a new series.

I know most of you are not big fans of synthetic, which I told them, too.
The call it fake animal hair.
The sale person, is an American guy whose native language is Japanese,
and actually he studied English as a foreign language.
When he comes to Tokyo, I meet him, and all the conversations are in Japanese.
We exchange honest opinions with each other and he is someone I can ask non-job related things.
As his grandfather was born and raised in Poland, he is quite interested in the country of Poland.
I asked many questions about the history of Poland.
Well, the history of Europe is complex and it amazes me how each country interacts, whether good or bad.
Japan being a country alone in the sea, the concept of having the boarder interests me.
Anyway,
I am introducing here this synthetic brush set, knowing you prefer natural hair.

Here is the update.
KZ1, 4 and 5 have been discontinued.
I have KZ2, 3, 6, 7, 8. in stock.
Chikuhodo told me that they cannot sell
KZ2, 6, 7, 8 in 2021.
I will have have those stock but I cannot order them this year.
I can still buy KZ3.
I am not sure if they will sell
KZ2, 6, 7, 8 next year.
Chikuhodo has the stock of Kazan squirrel hair, but will (can) not buy the hair anymore.
So when they use and exhaust all the hair in stock, they will stop selling KZ series

Hi Everyone,
In the previous newsletter, I wrote about saikoho goat hair of Kihitsu.
Kihitsu is a group company which sells Koyudo-made brushes.
Kihitsu maintains its own inventory, and develops a difference channel from that of Koyudo.
For instance,
Kihitsu has been selling brushes as gifts at wedding ceremonies.
Kihitsu also sells brushes at a sightseeing place. Miyajima, which has a beautiful shrine in the sea, has a Kihitsu shop.
Kihiitsu doesn’t cover overseas so their sales turnover is not quick, which results in having old inventory.
Goat hair will not be discontinued, but the softness in old hairs are better.
I asked Kihtisu to pick up brushes with old hairs.

Hi Everyone,
Kihitsu started as a sale division or company owned by Koyudo.
Koyudo makes all of Kihitsu brushes and Kihitsu sells those brushes under the Kihitsu brand. (喜筆).
Kihitsu was selling fu-pa and BP series which were the same as Koyudo but not the entire products.
Now Kihitsu is only selling the inventory left.
Therefore, the inventory has old hairs, and the old hairs have better qualities.
For instance, this Saikoho is softer than the current saikoho.

Hi Everyone,
It is Saturday today.
When I take a walk on the weekend, I see many families on the road.
Fathers walk, smiling and holding hands with their daughters.
It reminds me of one TV commercial message.
It is Universal Studio Japan (USJ).
A father says, ‘Christmas of USJ. This may be the last chance my daughter comes with me. This is the moment I can give her now, this is the present I can give her now.’
Fathers in Japan, or maybe like the rest of the world, work hard, earn money and raise kids.
But, there are many funny (true) stories here in Japan.
Daughters, maybe at high school, don’t talk to their fathers.
‘When they carry the laundry of their fathers, they use a chopstick because they don’t want to touch fathers’ dirty clothes.’
This TV message depicts fathers’ bittersweet feelings toward their daughters, saying,
‘As she grows, she prefers to go out with her friends and boyfriends. She will never hold hands with me.’
When I see happy faces of fathers when walking with their daughters, I remember this USJ message.
This message appealed to the market. People have come back to USJ after the long downturn.
Maybe some or many fathers see this and feel they should spend more time with daughters? Or it is only me thinking ?
