    Straighten hair – brush-making process

    Hi Everyone,

    I asked Takeda how hair is made for a brush.

    I want to write about the processes in several newsletters.

    Natural hair is not straight. And it is oily and has strong smell.

    Therefore, natural hair needs to be straightened and its smell needs to be taken out.

    When hair is straight, hair moves more accurately as an individual hair. It is an important quality of hair for better makeup /calligraphy/painting.

    There are two ways of straightening hair.
    – One is to take out oil by ash – Japanese dressed
    – Another one is to take out water and oil, but to leave some of them in the hair – European dressed
    – The other one is in the middle. (FG, EXT, EXS and EX of Takeda are done by this method)

    Takeda names European dressed brushes a number beginning with E. e.g. ECSQU, EF, EPSQU, etc.

    I will translate and write the characteristics of each method later in coming newsletters.

    Yesterday, I wrote about Chanel.

    Speaking of a company executive, I remember my university friends.

    I studied marketing at university.

    In Japan, a student belongs to a seminar for two years – the 3rd and 4th years.

    I took a marketing class when I was at the 2nd year.

    I really liked a marketing professor so I joined his seminar. 

    It turned out to be a mistake.

    The seminar had several children of company owners .
    I felt I was an outsider of the group for the two years.

    Anyway,

    One of them was a son of a big family restaurant founder.
    It is called ’Skylark’ that has ‘Jonathan’, ‘Gusto’ etc if you have been to Japan.

    Though he was a rich kid, he did not behave as he was.
    Just a typical Japanese boy.

    Well, not sure who is a typical Japanese boy LOL

    He studied at New York University Business School, when I was working for Canon USA.
    I visited him on a weekend, it was a condominium owned by his father, where we could see the entirety of Central Park.

    It was the only moment I felt he was rich.

    As a matter of fact, he didn’t join his family company and instead chose to be a marketing professor.

    Several years after he finished business school, the company was sold to Nomura Security, a big investment bank in Japan.


    Later, Nomura sold it to Baine Capital, an American investment bank.

    So either way, his life would have been interesting and exciting.

    Sorry I changed topics a lot : from Chanel to a family restaurant,

    The reason I wrote is I found an album of my junior high school.
    It was located in a small town in Hiroshima.

    I googled some classmates and my search expanded to my college friends.

    Different from college friends, I was not able to find many things about junior high classmates.

    One guy became an anime writer. Another became a dentist.

    That is it.

    Is there a big difference between Tokyo and Hiroshima ? Big city versus small city.

    That will be another topic for me to write in a newsletter,

    Today, I went to Hakuhodo and Chanel.

    I want to talk about Chanel. Chanel never bores me.

    First, it is one blush I bought, please take a look.

    I wanted to buy it and leave quickly, because I had Hakuhodo wait for me.

    Chanel asked me to sit at the counter, or ‘told’ me to do so.
    I don’t sit at a counter unless I really ‘enjoy’ a conversation with a sale person.

    Then she asked me to register to LINE. I said, ‘ no thanks, I have registered to your system.’

    She tried to convince as thought she was not able to sell a product. I gave it up and registered to LINE. It took five minutes.

    Then she asked me, ‘ can I check the blush?’
    I said, ‘yes, please but can I take a picture ?’

    Then a fun part started.

    She said, ‘ a picture is not allowed at shop.’
    I said, ‘I heard about it. But I will buy it. So it will be mine. I can take a picture of my product, can I? ‘
    She : ‘ But you cannot take a picture at the counter .’
    I thought: (This will be a waste of time, but let me try)
    I said, ‘ok, I just take a picture of my product. Is it ok?’
    She said, ‘you can’t take a picture here at the counter’
    I said, ‘ a casher is next to chanel, why don’t we go there to take a picture? It is not the chanel counter.’
    She said, ‘you can pay here. No need to go to a casher.’
    I said, ‘ yes, I pay here, we just go there to take a picture. It takes only 5 seconds.’
    She was not happy, but we went there to take a picture.

    I thanked her VERY politely.

    Then we came back to the counter.

    I asked, ‘are you a manager? If so, you don’t have to ask a manager, so maybe you could be more flexible.’
    She said, ‘I am a manager, but I work for another shop. I am here to help.’

    Well, either way, she is at the highest position so she can take the liberty to do on her own.

    I briefly explained it to her, but she did not say yes or no.

    When I left, I said, ‘thank you.’

    It was ‘thank you’ for giving me a topic for a next newsletter.

    Chanel always gives me more than a product I buy.

    And

    I understand it takes lots of efforts to keep being a top brand for long long time.

    The cash machine did not return my card and cash

    Today, I had a new experience.

    I tried to deposit cash to an ATM machine, and the card did not come back.

    The first experience in my life.

    There was a phone on the machine, and when I picked up a phone, an operator quickly understood what I did. He remotely operated the machine.

    And

    The card was returned, and cash was almost returned, but not quite.

    So, he instructed me to wait there for 30 minutes or come back.

    Luckily, it was a machine at a department store.

    I also bought a cup of coffee – a good way to change my mood.

    When I came back, a man with a black uniform was waiting.

    I showed my ID and he gave retuned cash.

    He asked extremely politely, ‘I have a question. There was something I wanted to show to you. It is a small paper with cash inside the machine. Is it yours?’

    I said, ‘it is mine.’

    It was a tiny receipt. He must have known that it was mine, and could have said, ‘Hey, this small paper caused a problem in the machine. I wasted 30 minutes. Stupid!’

    Instead, ‘Is this paper yours ?’ ( He obviously knew it was mine)

    I said, ‘it is mine.’

    He said, ‘thank you. sorry to keep you waiting.’

    Maybe he dealt with a person who got mad after waiting in front of machine.

    This time, it was totally my fault.

    He was exceptional polite which made me feel guilty.

    My life is not eventful and this is something I can write in a newsletter.

  • Meeting with DHL

    Meeting with DHL

    Hi Everyone,

    I met a sales person of DHL. I was late for a meeting because I was waiting for EMS LOL)

    I have been talking with DHL reps on the phone. This is the first time to meet one of them in person.

    There are some interesting facts I found.

    First, DHL was bought by Deutsche Post. Previously to the purchase, DHL was an American company.

    Second, his former boss, an American guy, was my boss when I had a part-time job for Coca Cola when I was at college. Small world.

    Then,

    He showed me which countries I shipped to most in 2022.

    I shipped to USA by far the most, followed by Australia and Canada.

    I use EMS to Asia more than DHL and FedEX. In total, I ship to Singapore very often.

    The next picture shows how long it takes a parcel to arrive. DHL carries a parcel to a destination within one or two days (yellow =1 day: grey : 2 days) more than 50%. That is pretty fast.

    For example, a parcel arrives at USA next day ( there is a time difference, though)

    This sales person has been working for DHL for more than 38 years.

    I received a call from DHL manager who wanted to meet with me.

    I use DHL more often than FedEX and EMS.

    I am a heavy user of DHL.

    First time to meet with a DHL sale person.

    I am going to meet with him in Shibuya for coffee this week.

    This is the first time to meet a sales rep from a courier company.

    EMS is now available but…

    Hi Everyone,

    EMS is now available to almost all countries.

    It was the cheapest way of sending a parcel before, but now it depends on a country to send to.

    This is the order of the cheapest to the most expensive at the moment,

    Asia : EMS<FedEX<DHL

    North America : FedEX<DHL<EMS

    Europe: FedEX<DHL<EMS

    Asia : most clients choose EMS

    North America : FedEX is the cheapest but many prefer DHL.

    Europe : It seems to depend on a person’s experience.

    What do I like most ?

    DHL

    Because I like a person who picks up a parcel !?

    It is true that the current delivery person of DHL is very nice.

    He is always smiling and polite.

    I had a chat for thirty minutes the other day. He played volleyball till college, though he may be 170cm tall, not like 200cm.

    Though he wears a DHL uniform, he changes a hairstyle quite often, and I can tell he is attentive to fashion.

    He is good looking ( this is totally irrelevant, though )

    A delivery person rotates so it is not the reason I like DHL.

    The reasons are:

    DHL gives us two-hour time frame to pick up a parcel while FedEX gives three hours.

    I cannot move for three hours – that is huge.

    DHL is more precise on time while FedEX is sometimes late.

    When I send to USA by FedEX, the customs stopped a parcel twice while DHL has never stopped.

    It is outside the control of a courier company but they communicate with each other, and I believe FedEX has a responsibility to some extent.

    EMS?

    They are on time to pick up a parcel. That is good.

    But…

    There are two main differences between EMS and the others.

    EMS is a JP Post service and they deal with a domestic courier, too. So some of them are not used to an international parcel.

    The other is their system.

    While DHL and FedEX carry a paperless operation, EMS is heavily paper-oriented, and a person checks documents at the door and I need to sign it after all is done.

    So a delivery person plays an important part for EMS.

    It depends on a day who comes to pick up a parcel from EMS.

    This person ……

    He comes often. Maybe assigned to my area.

    He is not friendly, but that is ok.

    I write a content to a label. e.g. makeup brush set

    It is pretty simple, sometimes I write only ‘brush.’

    He always asks me, ‘what is the content?’

    I say, ‘ブラシ（Brush).’

    Well, it is true that English is not the official language here but we have to study it for 6 years at minimum.

    He asks me all the time and I say, ‘Brush.’ … It is probably the most unproductive conversation in the day.

    Well, he is the only one to ask and all the others don’t.

    The best part is not his English.

    It takes long to check documents !

    It normally takes two minutes if one or two boxes. Maybe 5 mins for 5 parcels.

    This person….

    Can you imagine how long it takes him to check one parcel ?

    Almost 10 minutes. One parcel.

    So it depends on who comes for EMS whether or not I have a good day….

    Now I change it to a game.

    The other day, when I gave him more than one parcel, I tried to brush my teeth and challenged if I could finish it.

    I was able to!

    Now you see how devastated I feel when I see him at the door…

    Well, I think I wrote too much about EMS today.

    Yesterday, I wrote a newsletter about 三日坊主, Three-day-boy, which means a person who quits what he decides to do.

    So I cannot quit writing a newsletter today.

    Kumano Fude Select is a foundation established by Kumano brush companies.

    I think I have written a newsletter now for three or four days in a row.  As you might know, I am not good at writing a newsletter, LOL.

    It is always difficult to keep doing a new thing while it is easy to start it. 

    In Japan, we have a saying, ‘三日坊主,’ meaning ‘three-day boy.’

    It means a person who cannot keep doing for a long time. Three days, for example.

    I am a good example of the three-day boy.

    I always have something that makes me begin a thing. 

    It seems to be a flash or spark at first, but I forget it after three days and quit doing it.


    I wonder how can I overcome it.

    I still believe in ‘spark,’ though.

    Haruki Murakami, a best selling novel writer, wrote about a spark. 

    He was at a baseball game in Tokyo.

    It was an opening day in April for baseball, and the Hiroshima Carp visited Tokyo to play the Yakult Swallows.

    Murakmi was sitting in the right field bleacher, rooting for the Swallows, a home team. 

    It was the bottom of the first inning. 

    An American player named ‘Dave Hilton’ hit a double to left field. 

    At that precise moment he heard the sound of the bat, something came down from the sky, and Murakami decided to write a novel and become a novelist. 

    He hurried home to write a novel, and it was the first novel which was not good for him, but won the prize.

    He was running a coffee shop at that time, and he loved it, but ‘Dave Hilton’ changed his life.

    I wrote that grey squirrel brushes was being mixed with synthetic these days.

    Some eyeshadow brushes have already been converted into ‘mixed.’

    G series have ‘N’ at the end of product number.

    G series will be continued with ‘N’ after grey squirrel hair is out of stock.

    When I asked Hakuhodo what the most popular brush was, they said, ‘it is S series.’

    They are brushes with vermillion handles and have been sold for a long time.

    The president of Hakuhodo has a strong attachment to S series and does not want to mix grey squirrel with synthetic for S series.

    Therefore, some brushes will not be sold when grey squirrel hair is out of stock.

    Hakuhodo told me that mixed grey squirrel is the same as 100% squirrel.

    Yet my clients prefer 100% natural hair, I can tell.

    日本だったらさしずめクライマックス再考となるわけだけど

    アメリカは違う。

    カープも独走して優勝してクライマックスで負けたことがある。

    あのときは「優勝」ってなんなの。っておもったけど。

    ドジャースなんて111勝だから比較にならない。

    今日勝っておけばロスにかえれて多分勝ってたと思う。だから余計に無念だと思う。

    アメリカはホームアドバンテージはすごいから。

    ちょっと見方を変えると

    「優勝って必要なのか」、と思う。

    メジャーもNPBも。

    クライマックス(プレーオフ）から日本シリーズ(ワールドシリーズ）へいって

    勝てば（いや負けても）最後まで楽しめる。

    実際ナショナルリーグからワールドシリーズへ出るのは

    フィリーズかパドレスというワイルドカードチーム。

    勢いがあるチームあるいはヒーローが出れば勝つ。

    Best of Five, 3戦必勝というのは怖い。

    結果的には給料の高いチームがのこっているけど

    例外もある。

    年俸は32チーム中の28番目。

    カープはこれをめざすのが最適戦略かも。

    Hi Everyone,

    I went to SUQQU shop where two people were waiting in front of the shop.

    I decided to go to other shops first :  Osaji, CDP and Tom Ford.

    Then I came back and those two ladies were still standing in front of the shop.

    SUQQU manager said, ‘Please sit at the counter.’

    When I was walking to the counter,  I felt their direct keen gaze toward me. 

    So,
    I asked  a shop manager, ‘if they were waiting, please take care of them first.’
    She said, ‘they wanted samples, we have given samples to them, they want more, It is ok, no worries!’

     It is not ok!
    When I looked back, they were still watching me like seeing a criminal 

    Apparently, they were not happy with the shop, and with me. 

    Shopping is sometimes scary, isn’t it??

    Mikimoto Cosmetic is not as popular as other brands. Its ingredients are uniquely made from pearls and said to restore and retain the moisture of the skin.

    There are only three department shops in Tokyo – Shinjuku Odakyu Ikebukuro Tobu and Mitsukoshi Nihonbashi in addition to the main shop in Ginza. So I don’t visit them often.

    So the brand is not known outside of Japan.

    I buy holiday sets every year and their service is great. I feel they try to help clients. Maybe because they are not so popular. But it is important to be ‘nice’ to clients as they became ‘fans.’

    I am not a fan but I say they are easy to call, talk to and ask questions. And I can call them anytime, which makes shopping easy.
